Milestone moments at FTS Resolve

This month marks over five years of service for two of FTS’ longest-serving team members: Andrew Green and Simon Christie. Andrew and Simon speak about their journey with FTS and how the company has evolved over the years.

Andrew Green – IT and Accounting Manager

Image of man standing next to a wallHow has FTS evolved since you first started?

When I first started at FTS Resolve – then called FTS Construction – the company was quite small. In fact, I first worked out of the house of one of the director’s, as we didn’t have the office space that we do these days. Which just goes to show how the much the business has grown over the last five or so years.

Now we’re a much bigger, more professional operation, with a fleet of over 60 vehicles and operations in several states of Australia. Although the working environment and business size has changed, it has maintained a great culture, one that values professional relationships and diversity.

What’s the most memorable project you’ve worked on and why?

It would be the first project I worked on, which was an NBN development project for Broadspectrum. It involved providing IT support through the digitising of paper maps and plans, which significantly improved project efficiency and accessibility to important information.

Helping the business become more efficient is what I enjoy most. Another great project I worked on was the integration of job costing software, Simpro. This involved the implementation of this system across the business, and providing support and training to the team.

What do you enjoy most about your role, and about working at FTS?

I enjoy that it’s a rapidly evolving environment, which means that I’m often learning new processes and then passing that information on to the team. For example, I facilitate a lot of Excel-based software training that’s utilised across a lot of the business’ administrative processes.

FTS supports a lot of professional development and you’re really encouraged to develop and learn new skills. For me that meant studying accounting. And the leadership team supported me with the flexibility to work part-time and study at the same time.

Simon Christie – Hauling Operations Manager

The growth of the business has been massive over the last five years. When I first started we only had a single, very small hauling crew. That’s now evolved into multiple hauling crews, servicing several different projects at a time – not just in Victoria, but in Queensland as well.

Even though the team has grown a lot, I love that it has been able to maintain the sense of mateship that’s been there since day one. And that speaks a lot to the culture of the business.

What’s the most memorable project you’ve worked on and why?

That would be the Tullamarine hauling project, which was for the NBN Co. It was a large project that was very tough, but extremely rewarding. It involved a lot of grunt work, which I don’t do much of now, having moved into more of an operations position. It was great being involved in such a large-scale project that was in its infancy, as the NBN was then, and knowing how much of an impact it was going to have.

What do you enjoy most about your role, and about working at FTS?

I enjoy the fact that my role is now a lot more leadership focussed. And that I get to be involved with projects from more of a strategic aspect.

The work at FTS is challenging, but you’re well supported and encouraged to develop and learn new skills. It means that no two days are the same and particularly now – as compared to when I started over five years ago – I get to work with a lot of different clients and meet a lot of people from all different sectors. That’s come about because the capacity of the team has evolved, meaning our crews can handle much bigger projects and work on projects that have a bigger impact.
